Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie - Small - Baby - Male - Dog - Baci
Description
Baci is a beautiful, tiny 3lb male Yorkie who turned 1 year old last month. He is with us because he has broken his left front paw. This is actually a re-break from the first break in February. The break never healed completely so he easily re-injured it. Because of the location of the break and his bones so tiny orthopedic surgery was his only option to heal properly this time. He was rushed to Cape Cod Veterinary Specialist this morning and will be having his surgery today. Dr Kochin will be doing his surgery which will require a tiny plate and 5 screws to insure the bones are secured while healing. The surgery is very expensive we have an estimate at between 2,500- 2,600. We need your help to pay for this surgery. If you would like to become a "Friend to Baci" please go to www.yorkiesinc.com and use the donate button below Baci's Bio. All Baci's friends will be listed. And we will post a picture of little Baci as soon as possible. Baci will not be ready for adoption for 2-3 months but if interested in adopting please submit an adoption application. UPDATE 5/10/09: Baci has had his surgery and Dr Kochin was pleased with what he was able to do and how Baci handled the anesthesia. He did have to do a bone graft to insure the bone adhered properly. The graft was taken from Baci's shoulder. Baci was a little nervous when we visited him today but warmed up while we were there. If all goes well he will be released tomorrow and I'm sure he'll be much better back in his foster home. Update 5/29/09: Baci is doing very well. He had a second cast change today. He will have another cast change in two weeks. We are hoping we can place him in a months time. Update6/7/09: Baci is still doing very well with his healing leg. We had noticed a skin condition when we got him in but felt it was likely due to poor diet. He has been on a quality level one dog food for weeks now. We know he's enjoying the better quality food as he is now a healthier weight at 4lbs. But we have yet to see any improvement in his skin. In fact since the cast has been on it seems to be worse. We feel he either has food allergies (we are still working on finding a food that will be good for him) or contact allergies due to the cast material....or it could also be due to stress from having to deal with the cast for so long. He has had to remain in a "No bite" type e-collar so he will not chew and scratch the condition worse. He is receiving medicated baths twice a week to try to improve this condition and this does seem to help. We can not truly assess this condition until we can discount the cast as being part of the problem. Update:7/28/09: Baci is doing very well with the leg. He will occasionally hold it up but for the most part he is using it. Unfortunately we have seen no improvement with his skin since the cast has been removed. Diet and medicated baths along with a few other remedies do not seem to be making much of a difference. We decided to go ahead and have him allergy tested to see if this might be cause his distress. We should know something in a couple of weeks. We also need to take him back for one final Xray to be sure that the plate put in his leg can remain and does not need to be removed. Update:8/20/09: Baci was recently weighed again and is now full grown at 4lbs. He does sometimes favor the leg but he is completely healed and an Xray shows that the plate can stay put. Baci's results for Allergies has also come back and he is allergic to quite a lot. We have changed is food again to one that has none of his allergens and now we will wait to see if this will do the trick. We are also trying a few things suggested by concerned supporters that have had similar problems in their own dogs. We are hoping to be able to place Baci soon.
